Issues Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Certain Over-The-Counter Products Due to Potential Presence of Foreign Tablets or Chipped or Broken Tablets or Gelcaps

Consumer: 1-888-477-2403 Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time

List of products affected in this recall:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Parsippany, January 8, 2012 – Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. (NCH) announced today that it is voluntarily recalling all lots of select bottle packaging configurations of Excedrin® and NoDoz® products with expiry dates of December 20, 2014 or earlier as well as Bufferin® and Gas-X Prevention® products with expiry dates of December 20, 2013 or earlier, in the United States. NCH is taking this action as a precautionary measure because the products may contain stray tablets, capsules, or caplets from other Novartis products, or contain broken or chipped tablets.
The affected bottle sizes are attached to this release. The Novartis Consumer Health Inc. Lincoln, NE facility has voluntarily suspended operations and shipments to accelerate maintenance and other improvement activities at the site.
This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mixing of different products in the same bottle could result in consumers taking the incorrect product and receiving a higher or lower strength than intended or receiving an unintended ingredient. This could potentially result in overdose, interaction with other medications a consumer may be taking, or an allergic reaction if the consumer is allergic to the unintended ingredient. NCH is not aware of adverse events reported with the issues leading to the recall.

These over-the-counter products were distributed nationwide to wholesalers and retailers.
Novartis Consumer Health Inc. is notifying its distributors and customers and is arranging for return of all recalled products. Wholesalers and retailers should stop distribution and return the affected product using Novartis Product Return information that is being provided to them.

Consumers that have the product(s) being recalled should stop using the product(s) and contact the Novartis Consumer Relationship Center at 1-888-477-2403 (available Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time) for information on how to return the affected products and receive a full refund. For more detailed information, consumers should visit our website at www.novartisOTC.com2 as of January 9, 2012. Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using these drug products.

Adverse events that may be related to the use of these products may be reported to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program either online, by regular mail or by fax:

Online: www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm3

Regular Mail: use postage-paid FDA form 3500 available at:

www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm4.

Mail to MedWatch, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787

Fax: 1-800-FDA-0178

These actions announced today, highlight the strong Novartis commitment to a single quality standard for the Novartis Group. The Novartis Group is making the necessary investments and committing the right resources to ensure these are implemented across the entire Novartis Group network. The high quality of Novartis products and operations has been critical to building the Novartis Group reputation over the past 15 years. Novartis Group is committed to ensuring the highest standard for patients who rely on our products and medicines.

Novartis Consumer Health Inc. plans to gradually resume operations at its Lincoln, NE site following implementation of planned improvements and in agreement with the FDA. The Novartis Consumer Health Inc. Lincoln, NE facility produces a variety of products mainly for the US market with annual sales value of less than 2% of Novartis Group sales. At this stage, it is not possible to determine when the plant will resume full operations and the full financial impact of these events. NCH will take a one-time charge currently estimated at USD 120 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, relating to the recalls and improvement work at the Lincoln, NE facility.

Novartis commitment to quality

The Novartis Group is fully committed to ensuring the quality, safety and integrity of its products. All Novartis Group companies have a clear commitment to patients and Health Authorities to ensure high quality standards for all our products and services. The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness from Salmonella infection. Consumers, retailers and others who have alfalfa sprouts or spicy sprouts in plastic bags labeled “Evergreen Produce” or “Evergreen Produce Inc.” should discard them in a sealed container so people and animals, including wild animals, cannot eat them.

What is the Problem?

The FDA is advising consumers not to eat Evergreen Produce brand alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts. The sprouts are possibly linked to 20 reported cases, including one hospitalization, of Salmonella Enteritidis in Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota and Washington State. The strain of S. Enteritidis is rarely seen at this frequency.

The pathogen associated with this outbreak is different from the pathogen associated with the outbreak in Europe.

What are the Symptoms of Illness/Injury?

Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, some individuals may require hospitalization from severe diarrhea. Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and then to other body sites. It can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to become severely ill from Salmonella infection.

Who is at Risk?

The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to become severely ill from Salmonella infection. The bacterium can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in these vulnerable populations. Most healthy individuals recover from Salmonella infections within four to seven days without treatment.

What Do Consumers Need To Do?

Consumers should not eat alfalfa sprouts or spicy sprouts from plastic bags labeled “Evergreen Produce” or “Evergreen Produce Inc.” Consumers, retailers and others who have sprouts in plastic bags labeled “Evergreen Produce” or “Evergreen Produce Inc.” should throw them away in a sealed container so people and animals, including wild animals, cannot eat them.

Consumers who think they may have become ill from eating possibly contaminated sprouts should consult their health care providers.

Sprouts are a known source of foodborne illness. Since 1996, there have been at least 30 reported outbreaks of foodborne illness associated with different types of raw and lightly cooked sprouts. Most of these outbreaks were caused by Salmonella and E. coli. The FDA advises that children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with weakened immune systems should avoid eating raw sprouts of any kind (including alfalfa, clover, radish and mung bean sprouts). To reduce the chance of foodborne illness, FDA advises consumers to cook sprouts thoroughly and to request raw sprouts not be added to your food.

What Does the Product Look Like?

The possibly contaminated alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts are sold in plastic bags labeled “Evergreen Produce” or “Evergreen Produce Inc.”

The alfalfa sprouts are packaged in 4-ounce and 16-ounce plastic bags with pre-printed labels. They are also packaged in 1-pound and 5-pound plastic bags with stick-on labels.

The spicy sprouts are packaged in 4-ounce plastic bags with pre-printed labels and 1-pound plastic bags with stick-on labels.

Where is it Distributed?

To date, the FDA is aware of distribution in Idaho, Montana and Washington State. However, consumers and retailers in neighboring states should check the product label to ensure they are not eating or selling Evergreen Produce brand alfalfa sprouts or spicy sprouts.

What is Being Done about the Problem?

FDA is investigating the problem in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health agencies in those states where illnesses have occurred. The investigation is ongoing. The FDA is also working with state authorities to take appropriate action to address any product that may be remaining on the market.

Who Should be Contacted?
Consumers with questions about sprout safety should contact 1-800-SAFEFOOD.

Eight Manufacturers Voluntarily Recall Pool and In-ground Spa Drain Covers Due to Incorrect Ratings

Pool owners and operators who have one of the recalled drain covers should contact the manufacturer to receive a replacement or retrofit.

CPSC recommends closing the pool until the drain cover is replaced. Today DHSS was informed that a restaurant in Missouri was contacted by someone claiming to represent “the State Health Department” and who also requested the restaurant’s “security code” and stated they would conduct a restaurant inspection the following day. The scam involves a series of phone calls asking for “security codes”, and sometimes, the caller threatens the restaurant owner will be fined for lack of cooperation. The calls are designed to pry personal information out of the restaurant operators. There are variations on the scam, but the calls generally involve requests for “security code” information. Some reports also suggest that the callers may have requested personal information, such as cell phone numbers. DHSS encourages any restaurant that receives a call from someone saying they are from the health department and asking for security codes, and saying they will be at the restaurant shortly to conduct an inspection, to not participate and to notify local law enforcement authorities. Public health inspectors do not typically announce their visits. At this point, the company has not issued a voluntary recall, but it is DHSS’ understanding that the firm will issue a press release soon stating that they are initiating a voluntary recall of all products produced by the company since January 2010 due to the potential presence of the above-named pathogens in products. No illnesses related to this pending recall have been reported to date.

Products included in the recall are all raw milk cheese labeled as Morningland Dairy and Ozark Hills Farm including products in various sizes of vac-sealed plastic in retail packages dating from Jan. 1, 2010 (code A10) through June 25, 2010 (code F250). Products were distributed nationwide, including 23 retail outlets in Missouri.

Local public health agencies with retail outlets that had received product have been notified by DHSS staff and requested to conduct effectiveness checks to assure product is removed from sale after the recall has been issued. For all other agencies, this update is for informational purposes.

Morningland Dairy has suspended the production and distribution of all products, as MDA, FDA and Morningland Dairy continue their investigation of what caused the problem.

Consumers with questions can contact MDA for further information or visit the firm’s website at www.morninglanddairy.com for updates.
<img width='1' height='1'
